MeetFighters News

Online User Icon

A smaller entry from the wishlist has been implemented today: when a member is online, you will see a small icon next to his name in the members list and his profile page.

Something like this: [IMAGE:http://www.allfighters.info/Content/images/user_online_large.png]

Thanks to hashbock for the idea!

If you have time, please have a look at the Suggestion Box and rate the entries that are important to you.

The purpose of this site is, by and large, is to help our members get to know and meet others with similar interests. There are two steps for accomplishing this goal:

  1. The system lets you find profiles that are of interest to you (and lets others find yours).
  2. The system lets you get in touch with those profiles (ant lets other get in touch with you).

(I think we all know sites that fail at one or both of these.)

One measure of success is the first step, that is, how many profiles are there to be found, and the general quality of those profiles in terms of completeness, photos, etc. The other measure, and the one I'm getting at right now, is the raw number of messages exchanged between members. Well, I am happy to announce that this second measure, that is, the number of messages, has just passed 100,000. That's one hundred thousand messages that were delivered on AllFighters since its inception!

On an unrelated note: a small fix deployed today, will make sure that certain messages (such as challenges) are no longer sent more than once.

Also, the Suggestion Box now lets you rate individual suggestions and bug reports. By rating them you let me know how important (or unimportant) a given feature is to you, which in turn helps me choose ones to work on. Your input is appreciated!

Happy wrestling,

Fighting Events

I am happy to introduce a new AllFighters feature: the Fighting Events.

I noticed many members were posting various wrestling events to the forums, but the forums are not quite ideal for this use. The forums can't sort events by date, cannot clear past events, do not show participants, etc. This has prompted me to think about a new format to present such gatherings.

Enter the Fighting Events. Using it is fairly simple:

  • You go to the current events page.
  • Here you click on the button labeled "Submit an event".
  • You need to enter a title for the event.
  • The event "owner" can change the dates or cancel the event at any time.

After that, you can fill in the details: date, registration deadline, location, minimum number of people. You can then add more details, such as event homepage, directions to get there, and a description of what the event is all about. Members will be able to register on and before the registration deadline. Participant lists for events are maintained, and can be seen on the "current events" page.

I have some more plans for this module, but I think for a "first release" this will do.

Happy wrestling,

Member Ticker

Some of the changes I make to this site are less visible, but some just.. "pop". Like the latest one, the Member Ticker (the scrolling thingy just under the flags at the top of the page). If you have JavaScript enabled in your browser, chances are that you already saw it.

I know it doesn't add much to the usefulness of AllFighters, but it's fun and it was relatively easy to do. I'm also hoping that this will encourage more members to upload their photos. I'm not sure how much extra workload the ticker puts on the server; if it's too much, I will have to disable it.

Please, if you have the time, vote on the poll in my previous blog entry.

Hi gang,

I made some improvements to the blogs, more specifically, how the comments and votes are handled.

  • Blog owners can now specify if they want comments sorted oldest-first or newest first.
  • If the blog owner has enabled ratings, readers can attach their ratings to comments. Previously, only anonymous ratings were possible.
  • The blog owner can disable anonymous ratings altogether, in which case it is only possible to rate along with a comment.
  • Also, it is now possible to reply to a comment, by clicking on a "Reply to this" button.
  • To change your blog settings, go to the preferences page and click on "Change my blog settings".

More is coming...

Something I've been thinking about:

Do you think it's a good idea to rate profile photos?

First, I don't mean to turn AllFighters into a sort of hot-or-not site. However, ratings can encourage uploading, and help float the best photos to the top. Also, members would get some sort of feedback about their photos in the process. You would, of course, be able to opt out from having your photos rated.

What do you think?

This poll is closed.
