I’ve got the start of one on my left ear now from BJJ training, rarely do MF meets get intense enough for that damage, but full on sparring is totally different.
Keep it away from the opening to retain hearing and just wear as a badge of honour
I developed cauliflower ear when I was in my early 20's while completing in Intramurals and open tournaments while in college and the military. Very few guys wore head gear in those tournaments as an unattached or club wrestler so a lot of wrestlers had it. It only developed on my left ear from getting caught in head locks and making contact on the mat. For a while it stuck out like a golf ball and was very noticeable. My GF at the time thought it was disgusting so I did go in and got drained by my Dr. several times. Over time it flattened out and today it is barely noticeable. When I wrestle now that ear gets very hot and swells a little. This photo is what it looks like now. Wish I had a photo from when it was bad. You can see it in my profile a little also.
By themselves, cauliflower ears are ugly. However, like scars, broken noses and to some extent tattoos, they are badges of honour from fighting, and in primitive societies you literally fought for mates, so they would be seen as attractive, in the way that raggedy old tom cats drive she-cats wild.
They do me!
I got a cauliflowerear. Most wrestlers have them. It does not hurt at all.

Those of you who watch pro MMA know that a lot of MMA fighters are strikingly good looking—not just great fighters’ builds but cute faces. And most of these guys with any experience also have classic cauliflower ears. My feeling is that their permanent ear deformities, while detracting a little from their facial aesthetics, makes them infinitely hotter. What do you guys think?
The original fluid build up is very painful. I got them drained and used magnets to compress them. They hurt for weeks. Then they go hard, but they get sore at any time! I got them in submission wrestling in my early days from people cross facing me. In bjj the gi doesn't help either!
Same experience with pain and drainage. Lasting effect is that I can't fit most earbuds! Got mine prying arm and head out of a figure 4 instead of tapping. Oh to be young and dumb!

Oh, Okay. I was just about to ask if that goes away because I see it on a lot of fighters and wonder if it's stuck like that.

Yes, they are! Especially if they're big or prominently sticking out.

Hey, legflex, how'd you get your ear scarring, you sexy fight stud? I thought they only hurt with the initial bleeding. Do you have pain later, too?

Ohh nasty. Luckily mine was on the outer ear and not the canal, so it's just a bit hard and bumpy now!
